Just wondering if there were fireflies in the Great Falls area. Saw a thread on here where a person saw fireflies around Deer Lodge and thats all the way by Missoula. Thanks for the replies

Grew up in Great Falls, never saw any there. Used to see 'em in Minnesota occasionally. Might be too dry for 'em in most of MT??

Believe it or not, I actually saw a couple in Belgrade a few years back. My guess is they got into someones car while traveling or something. Lightning bugs are not native and that is the ONLY time in over 25 years that I have seen any in Montana.

Sometimes critters get carried a fair distance. My dad was a regional manager for Monkey Wards, so he traveled all over MN/ND/MT. Anyway once upon a time he hit a small bird just outside of Fargo, and figured he'd killed it so didn't stop... in fact didn't stop til he got to eastern MT (this was the days of big gas tanks!), I forget if he was going to Sidney or Wolf Point or where, but durn if that bird wasn't still stuck to his front bumper. It hopped off, woozed in circles for a while (well, you'd be dizzy too if you just did 400 miles stuck to a car), then got up and flew off, apparently none the worse for wear.

Had them back in West Virginia. So thick on the 4th of July you didn't need fireworks! Trees lit up with thousands of them.

Been here a year- only flickering lights I see are downtown Helena across from Lake Helena.

OP, just curious where you are from? I'm from, duh, Ohio, & we called them 'Lightning Bugs' too. =) Not sure how far out it reaches. lol I'm in Utah now & never see them. I did wonder if it was a dry issue too. =)

I am thinking our winters limit the variation of bugs here

There are lightening bugs on Trout Creek in York. (about 20 miles NE of Helena) I lived up there for 17 years, and we saw them every summer, starting in early July, especially if the weather was really hot. One of the things I really miss.

I have seen them in eastern Montana, they seem to like it around a slough where there are cattails and their time seems to be limited. Usually see them in early July.

I never saw them in Livingston, Bozeman, or the Missoula area.
