Hello all-

I am considering moving back to Montana, I haven't lived there since 2009...in the NW part of the state.

So I have a job lined up that I think I will like, it is in the Harlem/Chinook area. I have a middle school child who is a bit different than others, I'm wondering what the general attitude is out there. He's a great kid, and I don't want him to have a hard time.

Thanks-

Chinook is a great little town.

Harlem is on the res, not so good. The Indians don't worry about being woke and can be very open about what they think. If you're not part of their tribe, it's really hard to fit in.

Thanks for responding.

I will be working in Harlem, but not living there.

I don't mind people being open about what they think, but of course being hurtful to children is never ok.
I have to decide which school district he'll go to.

Glad to hear Chinook is nice, it seems like it so far as much as the internet reveals. I've only been as Far East in MT as Havre.

Havre and Chinook share a lot of similarities. Havre is the closest larger town, so that's where Chinook does a lot of it's shopping. Go see the underground city. Pretty cool.

If I were you, put your kid in school in Chinook.

The rez is a different world. They don't understand or care about the feelings of outsiders, especially white, black or Asian outsiders.

I don't know much about either town but definitely DO NOT put your kid in a reservation school. Silvertip explained why.

Thanks for the info, both of you.

I've had a few really good friends who are Native American, but they lived off the Rez for sometime, so probably had a different work view.

Indians are just people. Good, bad, and everything in between.
The reservations are semi sovereign territory. Under federal government, but not subject to the laws of the state they are located in. They are governed by the Tribal Council.

I've known a lot of good people of American Indian heritage that live and work off the rez and have assimilated into society and are productive members of society.
The Rez Indians are not the same. There are a lot of issues on the rez. Some tribes like the Flatheads have really made use of their resources to improve the lives of their tribal members.

Most tribes haven't done that as well..
