I've only been to Fort Benton once and made a stop to see Old Shep (the statue) There is a very nice story about this dog. Being a dog lover I wanted to share this story about Old Shep. This web site has his story.

Fort Benton is a nice little town. I want to do a river float down to F.B. and do a bit of fishing next summer. There are several websites that have Old Sheps story. It is a great story but a bit sad also.

Is that a true story, or based on a true story? If the one I heard is true where the dog waited at the train station for years then its a heart breaker. How did the dog pass?

I believe it was a train that got him.

I have a bike trip planned up to Ft. Benton next summer. It's one of the few places in the state I've never been to, and about the first thing I want to do is get a few pictures of Shep's story. As a lifelong border collie owner, that type of dog is near and dear to my heart.

On a side note, it's worth reading about Ft. Benton's history - a whole bunch happened there in the course of the territory becoming a state. It's a fascinating read, and makes a visit very interesting.
