I thought this would be an interesting thread to see where people get their produce locally.

We usually buy from a variety of places. Most currently comes from a local produce market in Monterey called Del Monte Produce. We buy select items from Trader Joes and Coscto depending on the season as well. Costco in Sand City even carries some seasonal organics. We also have several farmers markets in the area. My wife just picked up some fruits and veggies from the Farmer's Market at MPC yesterday (Friday). The MPC Farmer's market seems a bit less crouded than the one in downtown.

Here's a map of local farmer's markets along with their schedule which I found online:

Also I just heard about something pretty cool called Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). You basically pay $22/week for weekly supplies of locally grown produce. We may give this a try just to check it out. Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) FAQ

If you have any tips or other things you've found locally you enjoy please share with the group.

Derek

Great..

Being a market farmer myself. I will follow this thread closely. I am interested in what others do for their groceries.

In Sonoma county they have this great guide, which you can get the times and locations for farm markets around the county. Also details out locations and specialties of farms that have on farm sales.

What we do when in California?
Select items from Trader Joe's and Safeway. Fresh seasonal items, baked goods from Farm Markets or roadside stands, also we like to find the little specialty places and go directly to them especially for seafood and meats.

Yes CSA's can be great for both the consumer and the producer. One of the hardest things for the producer is balancing supply and demand. Knowing how many customers want your producton a regular basis helps in this area..

I like the Tuesday Downtwon MOnterey farmers market. Also the once monthly Independent Marketplace in Sand City, although its pricey.
