What is the Pointe Saint-Charles area like? I've heard that conflicting reports of it being a really nice area undergoing some gentrification, and other reports of it being one of the roughest areas in Canada. Is Pointe Saint-Charles safe?

"one of the roughest areas in Canada" may be stretching it. I'd say it's an area that used to be solidly working class (with some crime issues) undergoing some gentrification. it's not the most vibrant part of town but you no longer need to be an urban pioneer to be found there.

its ok.. i used to live there

the whole area (also griffintown) is full of triplexes, some without balconies. these small apartments were built for the CPR workers and immigrant workers for the railway so the area always used to be slum. then there's the metro station and 1-2 decent convenience stors and deps along centre street. that is all really.

good thing its cheap, (cheapest rent in montreal aside from verdun) semi quiet and not as crowded.. its the main reason that drew me there, i disliked very crowded streets to park my car.. and pretty close to downtown, atwater market and a lot of fun stuff on notre-dame st.
