Montreal's escort/prostitution problem (homes, buying, construction)

We're thinking about moving to Montreal from the US and have heard montreal is notorious for this. How bad is it? is it legal? what areas to avoid this? is police doing anything about it?
It's a big city with many nice areas to live in. The problem is generally confined to two areas (Centre-Sud and Hochelaga-Maisonneuve) and appears to have diminished somewhat in recent years.

thanks. i think you're referring to the 'street-action' places to avoid....right? I've heard of those two areas.
what about escort services in general? i heard that they're running the city....especially downtown....and the local police isn't doing anything about it.

Sounds like a bit of an exaggeration. It's a city of 1.7 million with close to 4 million in the metro.

Running the city? No. It's all fairly under the radar, and the buying and selling of sexual services has never been illegal in Canada, but most surrounding activities, such as public communication for the purpose of prostitution, brothels and procuring are offences under criminal law. It's not something you have to think about, I lived in Montreal for 22 years and never saw a prostitute or had this trade in any way effect my life at all. It's not something people really think that much about as a big civic problem, they're more concerned with municipal corruption, traffic, infrastructure construction, ethno-linguistic tensions, and provincial policy.
The escort industry exists here and it is a bit more open than the other cities in terms of advertisement. It is somewhat an accepted part of Montreal culture. You will see them advertise even in local newspapers (at least they do out here in Monteregie). If you don't partake, ignore. If you partake, welcome! If the police not 'cracking down' on it bothers you, then Montreal isn't the place for you, as others have said there is far more on people's everyday concern. Contact dancing and escorts are here, end of, and I don't know any locals who care.
I haven't seen a street prostitute since I moved here 2 years ago. I'm from Vancouver, it was far more common there.

Why would the police do anything about it? Prostitution, in and of itself, is not illegal.
Ontario has introduced legal brothels, which is a great idea. It's much safer for the women.
Prostitution is NOT a problem in Montreal. Street prostitution barely exists anymore. And the escort industry is big but it stays out of sight. I noticed more adds for escorts in Toronto then in Montreal.
