Rue Saint Marc pedestrian tunnel safe? (stations, metro, children)

I havent heard any negatives concerning safety in the tunnel.
As you are using it to get to the Metro why not avoid the tunnel altogether and board the Metro at the Guy or Atwater stations.
It can be kind of deserted so that might make it feel unsafe but I honestly have never heard much about it. This is based on my observations of driving through there. I second jambo101's comment though about getting on the metro at Guy. If you are on the north side of the tunnel you are much closer to that station.
