My husband has a potential job in Fairmont. We'd be moving from the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and are looking to slow life down but not sure we can go from 100 mph to sleepy little town. Where would you recommend? We have 1 school aged child and 2 preschoolers so family friendly is a must!! Playgrounds, little league, good quality schools, etc. My husband currently commutes over an hour (to go about 10 miles into the city!!) so 30 minutes or less seems like a dream if it's possible. Looking at a budget somewhere below $500k.

Forgot to add, we're not big into the WVU football scene so probably don't need to be anywhere where there will be burning couches.

Best schools are in Morgantown. It has more going on than Fairmont, much more. Morgantown is expensive but 500k should get you a good house in a good area.

Given your budget and what you're looking for, I'd suggest Cheat Lake. They have plenty of terrific housing options, and they come with an easy half hour commute to Fairmont. Cheat Lake has a good school, and it is 10 minutes to downtown Morgantown, 20 minutes from downtown Uniontown, PA, a half hour from Fairmont, and around 40 minutes from Clarksburg/Bridgeport.

Cheat Lake is a pretty beautiful area. It's not a run home for lunch from Fairmont but if the husband doesn't mind trading off a little drive for scenery, it is a nice area.

Do you want a neighborhood that is 'in town' or do you want one of those newer closed off residential-only deals, (i.e. home-owners associations and cul-de-sacs...)?

We've always been forced to be suburb people just by sheer cost (houses in our subdivision run about $370/square foot and it is not even a nice neighborhood!!!) Not sure about being "in town?" Are there parks, city pools or recreation centers, etc.? Can you walk to shopping if you want to? We'd like to be within 5-10 minutes of basic necessities like bread, milk, diapers.

And no, we don't like "cookie cutter" McMansions but a quiet street doesn't sound so bad!

South Park but choose the area carefully. Some parts of it are full of students other parts are full of families and professionals in old beautiful brick houses. Walkable to downtown Morgantown which is a vibrant small city, this is coming from someone who lives in the DC area.

Cheat Lake is nice too, but pretty suburban.

Morgantown has a very lively real estate market with all sorts of options available. Take a few minutes to go through the pages on this site and you will see what I mean. There is everything from $6 million homes down to relatively modestly priced choices.
