I hear so many people discuss how they find houses on the web on their own. How do people find houses on the web? What are the main websites for non realtors to find homes? If you took a raw guess what percentage of homes would you say a good non realtor researcher has access to? Assuming they used both web and non web related sources? Thanks for any responses.

There's realtor.com and then there are local real estate sites, too, that have homes for sale. I don't think it's possible to sell a home without having a presence on the web. It's the first place buyers look at for homes.

What state are you looking to buy in? Find the community your looking in then do a google search. Like if your looking in Boston, google boston real estate. See what pops up first.

Realtor.com is good, but I find that many homebuyers use local websites as well and more than just one local site.

I have a personal friend who will be buying through me and he uses both of my MLS-linked websites as well as Coldwell Banker's website. You'd be surprised how many home listings get put out on websites and never make it to the MLS...

I was just curious, but i would like to move to Connecticut eventually. Thanks for all of your help. Quick question do realtors normally allow clients to search their MLS or are you just doing that because that is a friend?

When we were looking for houses we found a local real estate website that we used to look at homes. We were moving from 3 hours away and liked that the local real estate company had several pictures of the interior of the home on the site (usually at least 12 photos). It saved us a lot of time and hassle when we did start viewing homes in person. Realtor.com is fine but most realtors don't put a lot of photos on that. We were also looking in a very specific area so we used the search features on the local site to narrow down our choices. Anyone can access most real estate websites these days. The sites that realtors have access to just has more information about the homes, original list price, commission terms, days on the market, etc.

The trick is trying to find a real estate agent who lets you search the MLS on their site without signing up or creating an account. You might post a thread in the city forum you're considering and ask people to DM you a site (so that the response isn't deleted for advertising).
