Buying a mortgage online? Not sure I know what you mean. I had an actual person call me who gave me a very competative rate, but then Googled the company and found some very negative information on them.
i would shop around whether online or in person.
I worked for LendingTree, and I beat a few deals while working there.
Most of the time our fees were high, but borrowers also go with someone they can trust.

Did you meet the guy? Do you know where he is at? Did you get a good feel of whether he is a sound, experienced, trustworthy lender with your best interests in mind? Clearly the best lenders don't work at some call center in S. Carolina.
The only people that I would recommend to even try using the internet to obtain a mortgage would be someone who is very experienced and versed in mortgages and real estate transactions.
It seems as almost every company out there has lots of negative press floating around the internet. Most top companies (even reputable ones) have websites (created by ?) that are set up to exclusively bash that particular business. You have to remember that folks are more likely to complain (legit or NOT) if things don't go their way. You never seem to hear enough about the success stories.
