Both ~ I bought an '01 in '03 that I sold in '08 for an '08 which I hated beyond belief and sold a couple months later and replaced with an '05. The '08 was both slower AND had noticeably worse fuel economy (best on that was 45-ish IIRC) than either the massively abused '01 or my pristine '05.
Fair enough, I've raced both gen and I feel the 08+ is faster and a lot more good looking. The pre-gen is cool but it is butt ugly. It looks a lot better than the CBR250R though.
I'm the exact opposite... I think the '08+ are butt ugly, like pretty much every other modern sportbike (or sporty Looking bike). The '08 absolutely Handled better, and it may have a better top end (though the numbers don't support that) but it was a dog for street riding. Took me a month to fix the crappy carbs/jetting that came from Kawasaki, but got that sorted just in time to realize I didn't want the dang thing. S'ok though, I walked away from that with an extra $500 in my pocket.
Wife thought it was way harder to ride too (as someone with an inseam deficit), and was very happy to get back onto the 88~07 lineage.
Yeah the carbs are annoying. I had a pre-gen and when I got the new gen I made sure to jet the carbs. After adding a 2 Bros full exhaust. It's amazing. Now I tested the 2 gens stock because I had both and on the top end the new gen is definitely faster. They are about the same on the lower end. On the street, I sensed no difference. I didn't expect much for they are both 250cc. They both are high strung to me though. I really had to go through the gears. Which is fun because I doing that. They are both nimble and eager so I had no issue with either performance wise.
huh, a shop near me recently started carrying Cleveland Cyclewerks. now i see it in this article. guess those guys are doing something right (or at least doing some decent marketing...)
i too was surprised to see 78mpg for a v star 1300
It's funny to read about "high mpg" and none of these machines come close to being aerodynamic.
Look up Craig Vetter.
And check out what he did to Terry Hershner's Zero S electric motorcycle. He gets over 200 miles range AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS 65-75mph. He does have more battery than stock, but he's getting around 100watt hours/mile which is equivalent to over 100mpg at these speeds. He's been riding across the country back and forth since the spring.
i was impressed with the vstar nothing else on the list really appealed to me
