I'm excited to see it! The scene with Hank Reardon coming home to his family was a great teaser.

I'm catching a bit of the buzz on this one (in the biz, so...)

Apparently, the adaptation is very close - some would say too close - to the source material. Without massive funding, there was no way to set it as a period piece, so it's a "near-future" setting. Which made some pretty serious hand-waving necessary to convince the viewers that trains have all of a sudden become the hot technology. And as dialogue is cheap and easy to shoot, there's a lot of talking. (Again, faithful to the book.)

And I suspect that may be the movie's problem. It has to be a highly faithful adaptation to appeal to the die-hard fans. But Ayn Rand convinced interesting ideas by writing horrible lines for one-dimensional characters, and the general public won't plunk down cash to watch a movie consisting of poorly-written dialogue. You can't take a book by an author who considers an 80-page radio speech "exposition" and transfer it wholesale to the screen. Doesn't work.

It took a Peter Jackson and a gigantic budget to bring "Lord of The Rings" alive in a cinematic version that worked as film, and one of the ways he achieved that was to slash-and-burn through Tolkien's prose, to get at the world and the events behind the words. From what I've heard, this movie takes the exact opposite approach.

But I guess we'll see what the invisible hand of the market does...

^ Intermission probably not needed. This is part one of a projected three-parter. That's bad for a couple of reasons. First, this movie is not a complete story, but will leave you off in the middle. Even if it's well done, you won't get the sense of closure from a true ending. Second, if this low-budget effort doesn't find an audience and make some money, will there even be a part two? In which case, is it really worth seeing? They have to hope for some very good reviews.

I've found the trailer very impressive looking. I was also dreading the book being made into a movie but it looks pretty stylish and suitably grand. Of course, I live in Socialist-ville, so the chances of me getting to see it here are Buckleys and none. (and these are the people who NEED to see it)
I'm hoping it'll still be running when we head Stateside May 10 but don't like our chances. It might be on DVD but I think it'll be spectacular on the big screen.

Every single American needs to go to the movie theater and see this movie. It starts April 15th (the traditional tax day).

Even if you are liberal/progressive, you need to see it. Most people come out of high school and college with strong liberal views, but it can be overcome with research, real-life experience, and an understanding of human nature. The way things are going, many Americans will be "going Galt" soon, and businesses have for decades now ignored our warnings and refused to hire anyone to begin learning how to run power plants and other key systems we all need for modern life. These are jobs that require a good decade to master, and in many cases the working groups have not a single member under age 60.

There is an earlier thread on the politics forum as well.

The date was not chosen randomly. It is the traditional income tax day.

Expect it to be savaged by the left wing big media outlets. Said to be based faithfully on the book, the film is pro free enterprise, the capitalist system, individual initiative, responsibility, and freedom, and is strongly anti collectivism and government control. Because of these positions it will receive scathing written and broadcast reviews from the so called mainstream media.

The early reviews on RottenTomatoes.com are not kind. It currently has a score of 7 (on a 100 point scale), so it is among the lowest scores ever. As for "expect it to be savaged by the left wing big media outlets," well, sometimes a bad movie is just a bad movie. As one reviewer said, "Don't hold your breath for parts 2 and 3."
