Renee Zellwegar and/or Nicole Kidman. I love them both and I think they have more talent than most. Although, I will agree with you JohnHAdams about Meryl Streep. Everything that woman does is awesome.
I'd probably go with Meryl Streep. She can play smart, she can play dumb. She can play modern, she can play period. She can play American, she can play foreign. She can play comedy, and she can rip your heart out with sadness.

She doesn't just play smart, she is smart. It seems like most of her movies just turn up golden.
Now Val Kilmer on the other hand.....a talented actor who can't find a big movie to save his life.

I agree that Meryl Streep is one of the few who could lose herself and becomes the character she portrays. Another one following her footsteps is Cate Blanchett...rising up in ranks.
Meryl Streep, hands down.
Helena Bonham Carter
Kate Winslet
Amy Adams
