I love the films from the 1940's and 1950's. remember watching them as a child w/my Mom who was a movie addict and loved learning about that era.
Tonight on TCM am watching "Clash by Night" which stars Stanwyck, Marilyn Monroe and Robert Ryan. (Also beautiful sets, in my favorite town, Monterey) Anyone else love these movies, and wish they made them (and the stars) like this today?
Well she was in my favorite noir picture, "Double Indemnity". "The Strange Love of Martha Ivers" is another good noir of her's from the 40s.
She was fantastic in "The Lady Eve", a Preston Sturgis comedy from the 40s. "Ball of Fire" is another good comedy with her.
Be sure to see the 1953 "Titanic" with her and Clifton Webb. Great soap opera set on the doomed ship. Get the DVD and fast forward the scenes with Robert Wagner who was a plague on 1950s pictures from Fox.
I did see the Titanic, she was beautiful in that film. I loved Clash by Night but again the ending was strange. She leaves both men, and then gets the baby back?. I guess that was an interesting twist for those times. It was fun to see a young Marilyn Monroe in that film, also.
She also starred in "The Thorn Birds". It was a television series. richard chamberland was her love interest inti. it was a television movie and she ...well i won;t tell. It was made for TV, but a great miniseries. Loved her in it. It might have been one of her last appearances.
She was incredibly hot in "Ball of Fire". I loved the way she slowly got to Gary Cooper's shy, bashful character in that film.
Another lesser known, but very good Stanwyck film is "Witness to Murder" (1954). It co-stars George Sanders, who was an underrated actor is his time, IMO.
She had the best azz too - well, at least back then - Robert Taylor.
