They tend to play the 'straight guy/gal'. A lot of the time they don't have much personality, or appear 'mysterious.'

They are often quiet and have little dialogue, especially male roles in say Western, Action or Adventure films. They tend to be on the introverted side, in other words.

The sidekick is often the comedic relief, is the chatty, goofy one. The main character traditionally does not fit this role but that changed a lot in the 90s.

They are often moody and lack a sense of humour.

Or maybe I'm talking crap? lol
