Austin, live music capital of the U.S. The place actually pursues live music. And is a college town. And is capital of the state.

It's just the beginning. Austin continues to grow. The scene grows with it.

Nashville
Savannah is getting to be huge. Music in many bars every weekend, always a couple of good concerts, many street musicians.

Asheville, NC - along with having the title of "Beer City USA" the past 3 years, we've also got quite the thriving music scene.

And we're compared to Austin in vibe, obvi Austin is much bigger tho

Austin is over-hyped.
The suburbs are sprawling and with such a strong anti-tax atmosphere here, we're already seeing the system maxed out. Unless you have a stellar job or lots of money, you'll be in the less than ideal, not very musical whitebread suburbs, which tend to run very TeaParty-ish and Ghetto (in my experience, much like most of Texas) and definitely not musical or 'weird' in my opinion. The suburbs that is. Downtown is cool. The same could probably be said for many cities, and obviously, it depends where you're coming from...it's all relative.

Here's a book you may want to pick up at yr local library:

Amazon.com: SPIN Underground U.S.A.: The Best of Rock Culture Coast to Coast (Best of the Rock Culture Coast to Coast) (9780679755753): Spin Magazine: Books
Austin is in there, no doubt, just thought you may want to hear an opposing viewpoint from the Pro-Austin people on here. Cheers!

P.S. Austin is way cheaper than PDX, SEA, etc.
Having lived in all three. But,you may get what you pay for.
