Anyone know if the tree scene is in the new one? That was the really unique part of the original for me, and I'd be curious to see a high-budget remake of that scene.

pretty easy to believe that the new one is more "scary."
The original Evil Dead was almost like a horror spoof. It was such a cool movie, but over-the-top cheesy LOL. This new one looks like its going to be a legit horror movie.
We saw the Evil Dead remake today and it was very disappointing. It is gory and violent, but not at all "scary" and it is played straight-unlike the wonderful original campy cult classic Evil Dead of 1981.
This one ups the ante on violence according to the reviews and those commercials of people in the theater being scared "Paranormal activity" style makes me want to see it less, Not more. The original was campy and fun. I remember watching this on VHS at my friends house in my old neighborhood growing up and even then we got laughs out of it. We followed it up with Toxic avenger 1-3 and had even more laughs while overdosing on soda and Pizza hut.
Horror goes for shock value in most films today. Buckets of blood are outdone by bigger buckets. If this is combined with suspense and a coherent story it can work but more often then not it just looks to shock and that's it.
Waaaay under. I saw the new one and it's awful - not scary at all just gory. The story has been changed and not for the better.
