Oh Gawd this movie makes me larf. They pass this off as history but it's just another attempt at a gobshte passing off his version of history for the truth. I thought the funniest line in the movie was when the son wanting to enlist told Gibson that "The war might be over by then" to which Gibson should have replied "Good!". More propaganda MURICA HELL YEAH!
Your post makes no sense. First, the movie is clearly fictional, not history, even if it takes place in the past. Second, you seem to be objecting that Gibson's character didn't say "Good," but what he says is "God willing," which is pretty much the same thing.

I agree with the OP. I saw it the first time and thought it was good, but I saw it again on TV and GOD is it corny.
Worst line that I remember is when Mel comforts that young black kid and says, "Don't worry. One day we'll live in a nation where...ALL men are created equal."
Look at the IMDB boards and it's all British people complaining how the Brits were portrayed in the movie. Probably they have a point. Hey, forgot Heath Ledger was in this one.
The rest of the movie is garbage. Not just in terms of historic inaccuracy (Braveheart and Gladiator were even worse historic nonsense), but just in terms of a coherent plot, believable characters, and story credulity. The Patriot is yet more evidence that the Emmeriches may understand film direction, but they don't understand story.
The movie has impressed me greatly. I cried once and again watching "The Patriot".
This is how the USA has got the independence! Thanks to simple people like the heroes of the movie.
