I would like to get your opinions on a certain movie that I felt was almost criminally ignored in last week's Oscar Awards.
And that movie is "Nightcrawler" which starred Jake Gyllenhall.
I loved it. Saw it twice, and thought both Gyllenhall and the film itself were worthy of at least Oscar nominations.
I saw ALL the movies nominated, except for Selma, and felt that Nightcrawler was easily as good as any of them. I also felt Gyllenhall's performance--in which, as Lou Bloom, he joined the great, seamy pantheon of Hollywood sociopaths--was as good as Keaton's or Cumberbatch's. If not better. He lost some forty pounds for the role.
The movie also had an excellent, edgy, rock soundtrack.
So who agrees? Disagrees? Why was the movie snubbed? Too controversial?
Or do you feel it was just not Oscar worthy?
Thanks in advance for your thoughts!

I have seen "Nightcrawler". It made my top five for 2014.
Lack of Oscar mention may be due to first-time director Dan Gilroy, film's late independent release, and ,yeah, the title.
I thought Nightcrawler was good but it didn't scream Oscar worthy to me when I saw it.....just saying. It was good but I wasn't WOWed by the movie. Should JG maybe been nominated for an Oscar? Maybe. SAG or People's choice or something like that for sure. Was he nominated in any other award circle? IDK.
Heard it was really depressing (I didn't see it). I also heard that the ending leaves one hanging. In addition, if you live in L.A., the idea of watching a psychopath roam your city is probably more disturbing than it sounds.
A nasty, brilliant, thought-provoking movie. Gyllenhaal is very good. I didn't enjoy watching it, because there really isn't any character you care about, but I've enjoyed thinking about it afterwards! I guess that is one of the signs that a movie is worth watching. I don't see it as an Oscar winner, but it could certainly have been nominated.
Yes--the ending was left sort of open..but I liked it.
I was under the impression that Bloom set that whole murder up, in the house that the cops found. He hired those guys to do it. That's why, after the car chase scene, and he sent his partner, that hispanic kid, to go get a pic--who got shot (very sad)--the gunman didn't shoot Bloom when he stood right next to him at the crash site before he ran away and the cops got there.
Bernski has an excellent idea about the movie being ignored due to the fact it was not released by one of the big studios but rather an Indy outfit. We all know Oscar has become more about the $$ in recent years, as witnessed by the increase in Best movie nominees from the original five to 10, and now 8.
This is terrific! It's like being a fly on the wall, hearing one (or two, depending on how many links you click) Academy Award members' opinions. Really good insight. Thanks for posting.
