The '70s was the Golden Age of cinema. So many good movies came out of that decade. But the best ones that still hold up:

JAWS
STAR WARS
THE GODFATHER I & II
ALIEN
LITTLE BIG MAN
SERPICO
THE OUTLAW JOSEY WALES
TAXI DRIVER
APOCALYPSE NOW
THE EXORCIST
CHINATOWN
AMERICAN GRAFFITI
HALLOWEEN
BLAZING SADDLES
YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
MEAN STREETS
ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN
ANIMAL HOUSE
DELIVERANCE

Some good movies there. I didn't like Serpico all that much, as it seemed a little slow.

One that I would add to the list is The French Connection. Just a classic, gritty cop movie. Don't bother with it's terrible sequel, though. I can't believe Gene Hackman ever agreed to that travesty.

The other day I sent a list of my best DVDs to someone. I had DVDs of movies from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 80s, 90s and 2000s. Apparently, I don't like movies from the 70s enough to want to purchase any.

To each his own. I really liked SERPICO. On the other hand, I think THE FRENCH CONNECTION is probably the single-most over-rated movie of the 1970s. It isn't a bad movie at all. But it isn't a great movie either. It's an okay movie with a few really good parts.

Trivia: The Stallone flick NIGHTHAWKS (with a great villain by Rutger Hauer) was originally intended as a sequel to THE FRENCH CONNECTION, but after delays and all the studio wranglings, it eventually became its own thing.

I wanted to really like Serpico, as I like Al Pacino and I love gritty, cop movies. It is tough to put my finger on why I didn't think it was great, so "slow" was sort of the best answer that I could come up with. I am guessing there just wasn't quite enough action in it. I also watched "Dog Day Afternoon" recently and thought it was also just okay and it is generally very well-regarded as well.
