I saw part of an interview with Helen Mirren, and at one point they showed a brief jumbled compilation of film clips, just unrelated, random flashes from unidentified movies. But most were unfamiliar to me, and some looked SO interesting that I started wondering - theaters often have retrospectives of actors or directors, but I've never run across one for her, although she's done so many films, spanning decades. I'd love to go to something like that. Her career started in the 1960s, but I've never seen anything before the 1980s.

Good one, Tamara.

Back to the question, I think they mostly do retrospectives after a person dies.

I'm confused - surely you're not saying, Tamara, that retrospectives can only be done for people whose ever film was stellar?

And, Tobiashen, retrospectives are done for living people all the time. The Film Forum theater in New York has an upcoming retrospective of the Coen brothers, for instance.

.........
When one has done a movie that is close to being X-rated (even if that part of the cast was brought in at another time), it runs a high risk of putting a major dent in one's career.
