The only one I might add would be Salem's Lot. It seemed like such a big TV event. I guess the book was a lot better though.

Yes, the book was much better. I remember being disappointed with the show. Similar case with "Needful things" although the movie was good but the book was better and "The Stand" - again the show was alright but book was much, much better.

I would love to see "Insomnia" on screen. It is my favorite Stephen King's book but that may never happen as I know it's not that popular among his fans.

Yeah, it had some good things about it. It was faithful to the books. It was BEAUTIFULLY designed.

But the acting wasn't that great, and I never once believed anyone was on a planet. Every set looked like a set. A gorgeously designed set? Yes. But still a set.
Yeah, that one, with Newman and Hurt. You could see the vertical seams on the matte paintings.

Note:
I'l say it again - one of the dumbest ways to critique a film is by demanding its fealty to the novel upon which it was based.[/QUOTE]

Not when, as in this case, they're being referred to as Stephen King films.

The Shining wasn't a Stephen King film. It was a Stanley Kubrick film, based on a SK novel. BTW, there was a mini-series, also based on SK's The Shining, which was much more faithful to the novel (though I preferred Kubrick's film).

Noting differences and similarities in films and the novels on which they're based isn't "demanding fealty." Now that's dumb. Comparing and contrasting the two are common exercises.

The Shawshank Redemption is #1, unquestionably.

Carrie was OK - I didn't like some of the scenes that had nothing to do with the plot (the boys trying on tuxes, for instance). The book was so well presented, and the film seemed like just another teen romp in parts.

The Shining I thought was one (over)long cartoon, between Jack Nicholson's overacting and Shelly Duvall's bad acting. But I didn't like the book, either.

The Dead Zone was OK - like Carrie, a poor reflection on a well-written novel. Ditto with Christine.
