Spoiler

Only three POWs wind up getting away in "The Great Escape."

E.T. gets to go home at the end.

Luke blows up the Death Star with Hans' help....and oh, Darth Vader is Luke's dad and Lea is his sister.

Ali McGraw's character dies young at the end of "Love Story."

Rhett walks out on Scarlett at the end of "Gone With the Wind."

Dorothy was only dreaming in "The Wizard of Oz."

Can't argue with that. Those "many" you reference so far have been just you and oeccscclhjhn, and neither of you have provided me with a reason to respect you. Demanding that the rest of the world conform to your personal convenience when it comes to discussing movies isn't the sort of thing I respect.

But doesn't this assume that knowing how a movie ends inherently ruins the experience? Take every film based on a historical event--you know the Titanic sinks, you know the hostages get out of Iran, you know the space shuttle makes it back. Or movies based on literature--if you've read the book you know how the whole film goes. The enjoyment of a film should be based on more than just a plot twist or a surprise ending, (or even a regular plot and ending) and it's unrealistic to expect everyone who's seen a 50-year-old film to remain mum about a plot whose details are readily available just to protect a handful of snowflakes who haven't seen it.

There is no assumption. There are different levels of a SPOILER; from minor all the way up to major. Just look at the joking SPOILERS above - it's apparent that there is no misunderstanding as to SPOILING a film, and to outright come out and show themselves makes it convenient to avoid their future posts as they're untrustworthy.

If I were a moderator of Movies, you wouldn't see this type of wild west SPOILER behavior, and this would specifically be spelled out in the Terms of Service.

Even if it's an old movie, you can open a thread to discuss it and still put "Spoilers" in the title. It's easy.

Anyway, it was kind of a different situation with this thread because the OP was trying to describe the plot in order to identify it, but in general I definitely appreciate spoiler alerts.
