City of Joy. The book was about the life of a slum dweller in Calcutta, India. The movie cast Patrick Swayzee as the Polish priest in the slum. Awful all the way around.
Just reread Lee Child's One Shot, which this film was based, and I still saw, in my mind, Tom Cruise and Rosamund Pike, and Robert Duvall and Werner Herzog when their characters came up. Just like reading The Sand Pebbles and Jake Holman / Steve McQueen, and Morgan Freeman / Alex Cross, or Frank Sinatra / Edward X. Delaney.
Horribly miscast. Not to mention there were all sorts of problems during shooting and it showed on the screen.
Another adaptation of a good book ruined by miscasting: Interview With The Vampire.
Really? I know that Anne Rice was not happy with Tom Cruise being cast as Le'stat--but after seeing his performance (one of his best IMHO) she loved him in the role
