Trust me, I know more about popcorn than 99.5% of people who have ever eaten it.
I just had some outdated microwave popcorn from Act III which claimed to be movie "buttered" popcorn. As much as I dislike Act III for other reasons, their outdated popcorn was quite good.

Popcorn in movie theatres is BETTER if not popped fresh. There are two major taste issues. Any popcorn that retains moisture will taste stale - even if it is fresh. Taste buds work that way. The second issue?

The popout ratio of corn determines whether it is fluffy or not. If a tiny kernel pops into a finished product twenty times its size, it it tolerably good. If it only pops to ten times original size, it is a dud. Ready for the real secret?

When I ran a theatre in Vermont, our popcorn was shipped in pre-popped from Connecticut... AND... I had customers regularly tell me that it was fresher and better than popcorn from another local theatre that popped it fresh. The upshot?

PLEASE think for yourself. Do not take what is handed to you as "correct" as actually being so. Popcorn is only a small reason to have this attitude.
Actually, I was also having fun seeing if spoilers could be nested, in case I wanted to do so sometime for a type of logic quiz, or to make a point. Didja finger get tired?
And GASP movie theater butter isn't really butter!
Sometimes. Often it can be "anhydrous butterfat" - a fancy way of saying clarified butter (the stuff you dip lobster in) or ghee. The water is removed by heating to prevent spoilage.
Now for the scary part... You used to be able to make this easily at home by simply melting butter in a saucepan or crockpot, keeping it over very low heat, and skimming off the top and discarding the water by decanting off the oil. With much of the butter sold today that no longer works! Read the label and it may say "milk product added to improve flavor." Whatever it is messes up the natural separation of oil and water. I wonder what THAT does to the body?
I only like white cheddar popcorn and movie theaters don’t have that, so I never get popcorn at the movies. Most of the time, I don’t get eat or drink at the movies at all.
When I learned that some of the pop bags are coated with teflon, i stopped buying popcorn for home.
i still enjoy it at the theater with lots of fake butter
