Funniest movies I've seen - today's humor is not as absurd as this - in chronological order (approximate dates):
"Fast Times at Ridgemont High" (1979)
"The Night Shift" (1980)
"Trading Places" (1983)
"Beverly Hills Cop" (1984)
"My Cousin Vinny" (1992)

Your Top 5 movie comedies?

This flick defies categorization, in a way - it's a comedy, it's a drama, it's a social commentary (since it moved with the moods of the decades), and it's a "chick flick."

Regardless, it's an excellent movie with reliable actors, and Ellen Burstyn always seems to hit a "high note" in whatever she's in.

I can't answer with five. My criteria is whether I can watch the movie several times or more and still find it watchable and funny. A lot more than five pass that test. A thousand more don't (e.g. I LOL'd constantly on first seeing Idiocracy, but it wore off on subsequent viewings).

But if I had to give a list of what I've (re)enjoyed recently:
- Being John Malkovich
- Blazing Saddles
- Grosse Point Blank
- The Freshman
- My Blue Heaven

Airplane
This Is Spinal Tap
Dr. Strangelove
Caddyshack
Stripes

Those are the first films to come to mind and the movies that really defined my sense of humor growing up.

Also, Trading Places and the Naked Gun. Maybe throw a Monty Python movie in there as well...

1. Blazing Saddles (this movie’s funny when seen as a teenager, and it’s even funnier when seen as an adult because you’ll finally understand all the politically incorrect jokes)

2. Private Benjamin (this was why I joined the Army; it made the Army look “interesting” and funny all at the same time)

3. Overboard (my favorite line while in the psych ward: “Well, he seems to like you...”)

4. Welcome Home Roscoe Jenkins (I thought this would be another blaxploitation/ghetto fabulous movie; however, it’s actually a very funny movie)

5. Pillow Talk (this 1959 movie was made before I was even born, but I still love it; Rock Hudson (yes, I know he was gay) is soooooooo fiiiiiiiiine in this movie. O-M-G!!!!)

Trading Places -- Eddie Murphy at his best

A Fish Called Wanda -- Kevin Kline stole the movie from the Monty Python boys

Airplane -- surely, the ultimate in goofball comedy ... and don't call me Shirley

Sixteen Candles -- who can forget Long Duk Dong?

Crocodile Dundee -- hated the phenomenon, but the movie was hilarious

These are the comedies I always stop to watch when channel surfing.
