In alien movies, every time there is an alien invasion, they call out the military. Then the soldiers start to go to town with their automatic rifles and gatlin guns. It all is loud and looks good for the camera. There is one major problem. Regular bullets don't work on aliens.

If aliens have so much advanced technology, it makes sense that regular earthly bullets
(and even explosives) wouldn't work. It's the dumbest thing for the military to pull out these useless guns and shoot, fully knowing that these weapons don't work. It's a waste of time.

Any one else noticed this in movies?
Projectiles are physically and scientifically sound. Why wont they work? Is just impacting flesh with more force to break up organic cohesion.

Are you thinking about invisible deflector shields? Well those are not scientifically possible.

If anything an advanced alien does not need to invade with ground forces. They should just bombard from far away.

To me I find the opposite. I wonder why on earth the various aliens seem impervious to various weapons that in reality would rip them apart. A hypervelocity project even the size of a marble will do serious damage.

Or why no one on Hoth thought to introduce the AT-ATs to the futuristic version of GAU-8. Those things were totally vulnerable from the backside.

I like how on first contact humanity's weapons don't work but then they do. From all the way back to the V miniseries with the teflon bullets in all calibers magically manufactured under the Nazi like overlords to deal with Visitors armor. The Stargate franchise when suddenly pistol ammunition penetrates Jaffa armor or dealt with the Wraith on the second episode after failing on first contact. The Star Trek rotating phaser frequencies to take out a couple of Borg and on and on.

All the way to Battle: Los Angeles where Marines emptied an entire magazine into an alien only to finally kill one and autopsy it just to discover they must shot center of mass, just like they always trained to do, to hit a vital organ. At which point they fell just as easily as a human soldier.

Any beings that have reached the technological level that they can move themselves along with large amounts of material at interstellar distances are going to surpass the technological capacity of 21st century Earth by such a degree that there really would be no way for us to compete with them. If you can practice suspension of belief to the point where you can ignore than, then it seems trivial to presume that ETIs would be vulnerable to simple kinetic energy weapons (ie, projectiles).

You and I are many orders of magnitude more technologically advanced that Homo erectus, but we're no more immune to being bashed over the head with a big rock (a very simple kinetic energy weapon).

Technology advance does not equal evolutionary advance, nor escape from biological incidents like when a projectile(s) splatter through organs.

Take a modern person today and send him back 100,000 years, he will still be killed by a spear all the same.

Of course given the genre we are not talking about the regular Joe, but rather GI Joe in combat gear. Now we can argue that the body armor of centuries ago might just be better than the armor a modern soldier wears when it comes to dealing with spear and sword wielding ,melee fighters. But then the Imperial Stormtroopers armor might do better against blasters than bullets also.
