Meh. As a "slice of the '70s?" Maybe. As a "timeless classic?" Nah. It's not even the best of southern '70s "redneck cinema."

A great movie. I love it. But a wide audience appeal? Not sure. Now if we were making a list of "cult classics," it would definitely be Top 10.

There aren't many that are better — White Lightning, Every Which Way but Loose, and Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry come to mind — but it's arguably the most fun, and Jerry Reed automatically improves anything he's in (except for S&TB3, which should never have happened).

The Outlaw Josey Wales is an amazing film, but you'd be surprised by how many other westerns people will go for, first, in spite of the fact Josey Wales broke the stereotypical "Inj*n" mold.

High Plains Drifter is a smaller, much darker, film, but it's easier to "process" and I think it's shot better.

And no Once Upon a Time in the West?? Tsk, tsk.

WHITE LIGHTNING is fun, but the ending is disappointingly anti-climactic. After the most boring car chase ever put to film, the bad guy drives into the lake? Really???

If there is a king of redneck cinema, it's the original WALKING TALL. I love Jerry Reed, both as a musician and as an actor, but SMOKEY AND THE BANDIT is okay at best.

I don't disagree, but because it is so dark, it doesn't have the wide appeal of other movies. I mean: The hero rapes a woman. Even though she's a terrible person who betrayed him, that's still hard to watch. Even by the standards of the early '70s, I think it was a mistake.

Over-rated. Don't get me wrong. It has portions that are sheer genius. But it's long and poorly paced. THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY is a far superior movie. Honestly, even FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE is better than OUaTitW.

OUaTitW is a Western for the art house crowd. Leone's other movies were made for a wider audience and succeeded.

I watched CASABLANCA for the first time last year, after all my life hearing how great it was, best movie of all time, best love story, yada-yada-yada.

It was okay. I didn't dislike it, but I didn't love it. If you want a Bogart fix, THE MALTESE FALCON and THE AFRICAN QUEEN are far better movies. CASABLANCA is okay. Timeless? I don't think so. The writing was very dated --- and even bad in places by today's standards.
