Last night, I was watching a flick about lesbian sea snake mermaids who went around tormenting working men of the field, seducing them before pushing them to their watery doom. Fascinating enough but since it was in Mandarian, I had to use the subtitles. After about 30 minutes of trying to keep up, that was it after a full day of work and I was out like a light.

Does having to refer to subtitles exhaust us, especially when we are already tired? Or is there just something of a lullaby in that language?

I find them tiring but sometimes a movie is good enough to justify them.

I have gotten to where I can't watch a movie without them.

I don't have a problem with them, I only watch tv with the subtitles on, so I'm used to it, even though I only watch a few hours a week. Of course, I can also read really fast.

It depends on how well they're done and how easy they are to read, and also on your own reading. If you're a reader and can read quickly, I think they're fine. I can watch subtitled stuff all night. Dubbed movies lose something, IMO, because you don't get the emotion of the original actors.

If they're hard to read or go too fast or have too many words over too much action, it's difficult. And I agree that if you're tired, they're an extra layer of effort.
BTW, WTH is the name of that movie?

Agree with this. I generally don't have any issues with subtitles making me tired. There are some instances where the text is small or hard to read on a light background that makes them more difficult to navigate.

Oh, that would spoil it.....actually knowing it from my description! But........you're in luck for while I didn't recall the title until I recalled who was in it, once I had that, I could look it up.
Spoiler

Me too! I love them. No missed words or having to say to hubby "what did he say?" Both of us have excellent hearing - get it checked every year - but I think some actors and some directors purposely have music or other noise at odds with the dialogue and subtitles make the movie so much more enjoyable.

I don't have to be looking directly at the words but I can still see them with my eyes raised to the action on the screen. It's kind of like peripheral vision only lower rather than sideways.

I watch English Movies with English Subtitles.

Without Subtitles, I don't understand. I am unable to catch words by hearing.

I really prefer subtitles even if the movie is in English, for reasons already mentioned by others. I am one of those people who just understands everything better if I read it than if I hear it. Putting the two together (as subtitles in a movie) is best of all.
