Is it mass media that is the problem today? Does that steal "life-altering experiences" from us? Did television steal life-altering experiences from the Boomer generation? Are tablets and cell phones stealing even more from the Millennial and Z Generations?
Probably.
I'm not suggesting great movies can only come from filmmakers who fought Nazis, survived the Vietnam War, climbed Everest, hiked across the Gobi, or whatever. But I do think there are a lot of filmmakers out there now whose only experience with relationships, conflict, love, hate, friends, enemies, etc. comes from movies and TV.
Special effects and budgets are bigger than ever before. But what was the last movie you saw that had genuine heart? Had something to say? A unique view or point about the human condition?
When was the last time you saw a great action flick with adults behaving like adults? Even when the movies supposedly are about adults, they're still acting like spoiled teenagers. See:
I remember having that moment with my son, and I've spoken to other fathers who have had that moment with their sons. That is the moment when the father realizes that he's building a human being, and it's one of those life-altering experiences for a father.

"Turning Red."
But that movie is clearly about the director's personal life experiences.
I don't think Dwayne Johnson is ever going to lead an Ibsen production, but for the kinds of movies he makes, I love him. They are fun popcorn flicks, not high drama.
Some of them are enjoyable. Then there's "San Andreas."
We watched it yesterday. It was the first movie in a while that we really enjoyed.
