The sequels are both a lot of fun. But the fact that the movies now had a huge budget meant the directors seemed to focus most attention on special effects instead of story. I still enjoy both a lot. But classics they are not.
The nature of sequels is that they are necessarily constrained by having to comport with the facts established by the previous installment(s). The original doesn't. As such, the first story is free to go anywhere, while the subsequent stories are not.
This doesn't mean that a sequel cannot be very good, sometimes even exceeding what it follows, but it does mean that the first movie (season, book, etc.) has an inherent advantage. And this often shows.
I think it does with the Back To The Future trilogy.
