I never liked Tarkovsky. To me it's the quintessence of the bore. I hate when directors preach too much and try to оverintellectualize. Why do you like it?

Especially I like the beginning when we can see prairie where the one herd of apes compete with other herd. And then they suddenly came up with the idea to use weapon after weird black rectangle landed the earth.

My favorite fragment from this movie is bank robbery. Do you remember it? Woody gives a note to the cashier but cashier can't figure out some letters ROFL

Cashier: What does this say?

Woody: Uh, can't you read that?

Cashier: I can't read this. What is this?
"Abt natural"?

Woody: No it just reads, "Please put $50
thousand into this bag. Act natural."

Cashier: Does it say, "Act natural"?

Woody: I, uh, am pointing a gut at you.

Cashier: That looks like "gub", it doesn't look like "gun".

Woody: No, it's "gub". That's a B.

Cashier: No you see, it's an N... G-U-N. George, would you step over here
a moment please. What does this say?

George: "Please put $50 thousand into this bag and...abt"
What's "abt"?

Anyways on the whole this flick is pretty bad compare to other later Woody's works. Some jokes are really silly.
For example I like 'Everything You Wanted To Know About Sex But Were Afraid To Ask' MUCH better. Not to mention of course such mastepieces as 'Love And Death' and 'Annie Hall'

Gosh, I dearly HATE to mention a Tom Cruise flick, but. . . "A Few Good Men" was one terrific film, and not mentioned so far. . . .

I would go with, I hope it doesn't exceed ten but in case, I apologize:

Godfather part 2
Rocky
Goodfellas
Raiders of the lost Ark
Silence of the lambs
Fight Club
First Blood
The Exorcist
Good Will Hunting
The Deer Hunter

I'll just cap it at ten. I am sure I have missed many but that's what I can think of at this time.......

as in the top three comedies.

I agree! This is one of the funniest movies ever made to that point. I sometimes used it as a "psychological/potential friend" test, when I'd meet someone new I could figure pretty quickly if we might become friends based on their reaction:

It was a terrible, unfunny movie! "Check please", not going to be friends.

It was a classic, one of the funniest ever made, I hope the Coens make some more comedies. "Can I buy you a drink, spend the night at your place".

Debb J, I like your list, but reading it I really hope that you're young and haven't seen too many "older" movies. This is not meant as an insult because everyone's "favorites" are just that, THEIR FAVORITES. I hope after you've seen a lot more movies that your list will expand.

However, it is really nice to see anyone, especially a young lady with such a diverse genre on her top ten list.

Some recommendations that I think you might like based upon your list. I'm not nearly as good as the computer at Netflix, but I'm good at this.

"Das Boot", over "Private Ryan

"Shawshank Redemption", over "Green Mile"

"A Very Long Engagement", at least a tie with "The Notebook"

Those are the only specific ones in a genre that I'll go with, some others that you might like;

"Stage Beauty"

"Manhunter"

"To Live And Die In LA"

"Muriel's Wedding"

"In America"

"The Contender"

"Michael Clayton"

"The Lookout"

"Gone Baby Gone"

"The Lives Of Others"

"Away From Her"

"Last Orders"

"The World's Fastest Indian"

"Pieces Of April"

"Dirty Pretty Things"

"The Proposition"

"Hustle And Flow"

I'll bet you a coke, or cup of coffee, that after viewing some of these your list with change. And if it doesn't you'll still enjoy some great movies and I'll still buy you the beverage.

I never liked most of Spielberg's movies. They are too commercial.
