I wasn't sure where to post this, but figured Music was the most logical choice.
I've been a classical semi-professional musician since childhood, and currently play viola with a local orchestra... I'm no Itzhak Perlman, but considering I'm usually chosen as principal, I guess I'm pretty good for a semi-pro. I did study music in college, but ended up with degrees in English and Library/Info Science, and have been working as a librarian for the last 5 years. I love my work, but have always dreamed of being a professional studio musician for television or movies. I'm not talking about performing live (although that would be cool too!), but rather recording soundtracks and back-tracks in studio orchestras.
So my question is, how would I logically pursue this dream? I currently live in San Francisco, but would consider relocating to Los Angeles for a job... and I have the advantage of playing viola, which is typically an instrument with low competition. I also have some connections in the music & entertainment biz, including a few celebrities - a famous pop star, composers, directors, etc - and my step-brother who's a producer/manager. But when I asked my bro about this idea, he was as clueless as I am! I know it's a union job, so how does one join the union & actually get jobs? Anyone have experience or advice for me?? I was thinking of recording a demo, and sending it out to whoever I know (whether personally or through association), but I'm not sure if that would accomplish anything. Whaddya think?
