"This is not the end , this is not the beginningJust a voice like a riot, rocking every revision But you listen to the tone, and the violent rhythm Though the words sound steady, something empties within ‘em WE say YEAH, with fists flying up in the air… Like we’re holding onto something that’s invisible there- Cuz we’re living at the mercy of the pain and the fear Until we dead it, forget it, let it all disappear"
PBS broadcast the 25th anniversary performance of Les Miserables last Monday night. That music has been swimming through my head since.
Thanks for the heads up...I love Les Mis!!!
Les Miserables in word, is a beautiful exposition of humanity...setting the themes and story with the passion of voice and music is an unforgettable masterpiece of life, that can apply to everyone despite their situation...
"There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and on...
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gone...
Here they talked of revolution,
Here it was they lit the flame...
Here they sang about tomorrow,
And tomorrow never came...
From the table in the corner, they could see a world reborn
And they rose with voices RINGING.... I CAN HEAR THEM NOW...THE VERY WORDS THAT THEY SUNG...
Became their last communion, on the lonely barricades...at dawn
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me...that I live and you are gone... There's a grief that can't be spoken, There's a pain goes on and on... Phantom faces at the window, phantom shadows on the floor...
Empty chairs and empty tables
Now my friends will meet no more... Oh, my friends, my friends...don't ask me...what your sacrifice was for...
Empty chairs at empty tables, now my friends will sing no more..
DO you hear the people sing? Singing the song of angry men,
It is the music of a people who will not be slaves again...
When the beating of your heart, echoes the beating of the drums...
There is a life about to start when tomorrow comes...
Beyond the barricade is there a world you long to see???
I dreamed a dream in time gone by...when hope was high and life worth living...
I dreamed that love would never die...I dreamed that God would be forgiving...
Then I was young and unafraid...When dreams were made and used and wasted...
There was no ransom to be paid, no song unsung, no wine untasted...
But the tigers come at night with voices soft as thunder
As they turn your hope apart, as they turn your dream to shame...

Well, I guess really it was Sunday night but I've slept since.
I read the book a few decades ago and cried across the entire last page. So the music does stir me.
The voices were outstanding. Jean ValJean was performed by Alfie Boe, a great voice. Jalvert is a guy from Florida with a powerful bass voice.
Marius was performed by Nick Jonas... yes. He was indeed the weakest voice in the performance but was, honestly, adequate. I looked up the program during the performance to see who was playing the Thenadiers and was stunned when I saw Jonas as Marius. Turns out he's been playing the role in the Brit theatre. His best song was 'Empty Tables'. He had also played Gavroche when he was younger.
The presentation included a reprise with four, yes, count them, FOUR Jean Val Jeans reprising 'Bring Him Home', including the original Brit guy.

Reason: > original Brit guy, not sure of name.

I have read the book, and have seen the production live 3 times. My face is wet from tears when I leave everytime! Such a moving production. Even watching it on youtube gives me chills...
Ahhh, Eponine has such a tragic life...full of hope despite her dreary life. She is a hero in her own right...
"Eponine: Marius:
So don't you fret /Hush a bye
M'sieur Marius/Dear Eponine
I don't feel any pain /You won't feel any pain
A little fall of rain/ A little fall of rain
Can hardly hurt me now/ Can hardly hurt you now
