Guitarist Laura Chavez wins national Blues Music Award a day before San Diego Blues Festival announces its demise

Laura Chavez became the first female artist in the 44-year history of the prestigious national Blues Music Awards — formerly known as the W.C. Handy Awards — to win top honors as a guitarist.

It was the fifth consecutive year Chavez had been nominated in the category, which has previously been won by such guitar stars as Derek Trucks, Joe Bonamassa and the late Luther Allison.

She said in an interview once that she'd often hear the snickers as she took the stage, like -- haha! what's she gonna do? ..lol. She's gonna play the blues, that's what she's gonna do.

Glad she finally got some recognition. I remember her from when she was w/the Lara Price band & gigging in the bay area. I especially like this live on dailymotion from 15 years ago ..

3 mins in .. she'll play the blues ..
