Definitely my favorite Rock and Roll Keyboard instrument, the Hammond B-3. I thought it would be fun to start a thread honoring it's roll in music, and in rock and roll.

I can't start a thread in good concience without mentioning Jimmy Smith, even if he isn't Rock and Roll, so here's the kick off:

How 'bout some Santana?
(Although I'm afraid they are using a B-3 "sound alike")

And not everyone's favorite, but one of mine is the late Brent Mydland of the Grateful Dead. Used to love watching him HAMMER the B-3:
(solo starts at about 3:00, and IMO is the apitomy of the R&R sound of the B-3):

So let's hear some of your favorites. (Dang, I miss me some Brent, although I just did get to see his keyboard in action, played by "what's his name" at a Furthur Concert at Red Rocks...)

Glad to know I'm not alone.

How bout a little more Brent Mydland and the Dead under cover. (I think Brent was the master of running the B3 through a Leslie Cabinet to get that THROBBING sound, love it!) Solo starts at about 4:00, watch the hands dance:

Maybe some Phish? I need to do a little more searching to find a better solo from them (they definitely exist), but this one just focusses on the solo. Too bad the photographer is more impressed with the other band members jumping on the trampoline

and of course, MELVIN SEALS. He was the last keyboard player for the late-great Jerry Garcia in the JGB. Perhaps the most soul of anyone who played the instrument. Watch this clip just to see what can be done with a little imagination. There is a lot better stuff from Melvin if you don't mind sifting through a lot of whole songs (I chose this one again because it focusses on the solo):

Hope everyone enjoys.

As a closing thought, does anyone remember as a kid (in the 70's) going to the mall when they had the Hammond guy come out to the Organ store and play demo's? As a young kid I used to be mesmorized watching them play, hands, feet and all. Memories
