I think I read somewhere that the flute is the oldest instrument, excepting drums, that they've found. That flutes were discovered from Paleolithic (early Stone Age) times over 40,000 years ago. Flute or flute variants can be found in diverse cultures like Japan, Rome, India, Israel, the American Indians, etc. For all I know maybe almost all cultures have a variant.
I don't know if it's common in popular music, but here's some flute in various modern genres. Feel free to post your own examples in any genre, modern or not.
