That's easy--Billie Holiday. Though her voice was beautiful in her early years, by the 1950's, years of smoking, alcohol and heroin abuse had damaged her voice considerably. Still, she could sing a tune with more emotion and pathos than most any singer who has ever lived, and the rasp in her voice only made the lyric more poignant. Here she is in 1958, singing "The End of a Love Affair" with a terrific orchestral arrangement by Ray Ellis. This was actually a "new" tune to her, and the first video shows how she struggles with the lyric. It is almost painful to listen to and one wonders how she could possibly master this song for the recording. But, shortly after the first take, she sings the tune wonderfully--with the juxtaposition of her damaged, yet captivating voice singing with the sterling orchestral arrangement--that is the second video. It should be noted that, unlike today, the orchestra was in the studio, recording every take live with Ms. Holiday. Less than a year-and-a-half later she would be dead. Nearly every singer since then has been, in some way, influenced by Billie Holiday's singing--she was one of a kind.
Rod Stewart, Joe Cocker, Macy Gray, Bonnie Tyler, Stevie Nicks, Bonnie Raitt, Pink, Adele, and my personal all time favorite--- the great Carole King (only raspy-ish, but fantastic!)
Joe could/can sing about anything brought to him, often times with more emotion than the original with a deeper bark and bite. I guess he felt SHE was really a THIEF!!
