The Replacements were the best rock and roll band of the 80's hands down. Sadly, their drunken exploits and lack of effort to go the extra mile cost them. But, they were great and one of the greatest moments was when they played the MTV awards drunk in 1989 and the crowd did'nt know how to react. Paul Westerberg pulled a Morrison when he was asked not sing a line in the song about taking pills but he did anyway. Most of the crowd just sat there. It was a brilliant rock and roll moment. The Replacements were the punk rock Stones! And, Paul Westerberg was and is one of the best songwriters ever. He has since sobered up and has released a string of great solo material. The album Folker about his aging father who may have died is brilliant! Anybody with aging parents should get a hold of the album.

Westerberg has/had talent.
Most of the Replacements stuff is very boring to me, though.
Any spark was absolutely gone by the time Don't Tell a Soul came out.

Of course, I think of them as a punk band - and they just don't hold up against all the great punk bands of the 80s.

Couldn't disagree more, in my opinion there was nobody better in the 80's.
"Don't tell a Soul" and "All Shook Down" were essentially Westerberg solo albums and in my opinion the production on both was a bit too slick (particularly on "Don't tell a Soul") but still better than most of what was being produced by their peers in the late 80's and early 90's. Most of the Mats stuff actually holds up pretty well twenty years later and that isn't something you can say about most artists of that era.

I don't really see them as a punk band. They along with REM practically invented the whole alt-rock thing. I see them as "early," alt-rock bands if there is such a thing.

I still have to dig into the Replacements a bit more but I like what I know about them. "Unsatisfied," is one of my favorite songs.

"Sorry, Ma, Forgot to Take Out the Trash" is a bona fide punk album.
After that, they got more and more "indie" rock.
"Pleased to Meet Me" was probably their last good album.
Then they just degenerated into a generic adult-contemporary sound.
Boring.

Let It Be and Tim are amazing albums. I remember playing Pleased to Meet Me until the record begged for mercy!

I like Tim a great deal. Here Comes A Regualr is brilliant! I put it on the bar jukebox and the old drunks love it. The song has joined Frank Sinatra and Johnny Cash as the top played selection on the jukebox. Your Welcome Inn 327 South New St Bethlehem PA!

I saw The Replacements in concert in the late 80's and was nervous buying a ticket. Their rep back then is that they would either play for 20 minutes until someone passed out or they would play for 3 hours and start pulling out AC-DC and Kiss covers to pass the time. Luckily I caught them on a 3 hour night and it was one of the best concerts that I had ever been to.
