I'm interested in hearing about band/artist modifiers, nicknames and to a lesser extent, interesting contractions. Lemme explain.
I. The rarest category is where the band name is usually used with a modifier:
"The mighty" Led Zeppelin – Led Zeppelin was often referred this way by FM radio DJ's. Was this an L.A. thing? West Coast? American? Whole planet?

I can't think of any others.
II. Nicknames. The nick is synonymous with and often substituted for the official name. There are tons of these:
"The Chairman of the Board" – Frank Sinatra
"The Killer" — Jerry Lee Lewis
"The Material Girl" -- Madonna
"The King of the Surf Guitar" -- Dick Dale
"The Boss" -- Bruce Springsteen
"The Little 'ol Band from Texas" – ZZ Top
III. Contractions are the commonest (Judas Priest --> Priest; Scorpions --> Scorps, The Dead, Led Zep, etc.) but there are some interesting ones:
Psychedelic Furs --> P-Furs
Ted Nugent has a II and III: "Motor City Madman" and "The Nuge"
I'd like to see what you folks come up with.

The Hawks dubbed themselves just "The Band" when they performed with Ronnie Hawkins then they later recorded under the name The Band with Bob Dylan and on their own.
Jiles Perry "JP" Richardson was commonly known as "The Big Bopper." He died in a plane crash along with Buddy Holly and Richie Valens.
