I picked a CD out of my husband's collection tonight - Chicago's first album. I know Chicago, or thought I did. I like them. They're a little cheeseball, but it's fun music if you like horn sections, which I do.

But THIS. If I said "I can't believe this is Chicago" once, I said it a dozen times. It had a couple of the big hits ("Does Anyone Really Know..."), but the non-hits that I'd never heard before were downright psychedelic. It reminded me of Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Rainbow, early Black Sabbath. There were moments that even made me think of Sonic Youth and Primus.

It totally blew my mind. Who knew Chicago could sound like Sabbath? Where has this album been my whole life? This is not the Chicago I grew up with.

Hubby says they changed when they got a taste of what it's like to have a hit song. Too bad. I mean, not too bad because the hits were great. But too bad they abandoned that early psychedelic sound.
