What songs do you consider unlikely number 1 hits on the U.S Billboard charts, yet they actually were number one? Which ones surprised you?

Likewise which songs did you initially think were number 1 hits, but actually never did hit the top spot?

On Wikipedia last night I was looking at the Top Hot 100 Billboard songs by year, and in 1984 and 1985, I saw that Duran Duran's two number 1 hits were "The Reflex" and "A View To A Kill". But "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf" were not number 1 singles.

Eric Clapton had only one number 1, "I Shot the Sheriff" in 1974. "Tears in Heaven" was never number 1!

Some songs are almost forgotten today, but were number 1 hits in the 60's, 70's, 80's 90's, and 00's.

In each year I found songs that I recognized, but never imagined they were number 1. In 1986 Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus" was one such example. In 1966 Billboard Charts, "New Vaudeville Band's "Winchester Cathedral" was a number 1 twice!

Which ones surprised you for hitting number 1 or not hitting number 1?

Bob Dylan's Rainy Day Women only reached number 2 on the charts even though it's considered the best song of all time.

I truly believe it's all rigged. The fix is in. Songs are groomed to be #1, and the public usually bites, hook, line, and sinker.

I wasn't alive then, but I'm surprised Kokomo by the Beach Boys reached #1 in 1988. They were about 20 years removed from producing hit after hit.

Thong Song by Sisqo, that song was EVERYWHERE in 2000. I am surprised that wasn't number 1 but yet his ballad Incomplete (don't get me wrong, a great song) was.

I believe Foreigner's "Waiting for a Girl Like You" hit #2 for 11 weeks in either 1981 or 1982 but never hit #1.

Harlem Shake is a surprising #1 hit. I mean seriously, it is known for many youtube videos and not actual airplay or singles purchases...

Huey Lewis' "If This Is It" is a surprising not number 1 as well. I mean isn't that one of their most famous songs?

Maybe if I knew the methodology for how a song gets ranked. Since people haven't bought singles since the 70s, how are songs ranked?

I did, those hits I mentioned were the only number 1 hits for Duran Duran.
