Yes, a great Beatles appreciation. Thanks. Love those 'plagal cadences'...;-).....The Penny Lane comments were really insightful.
howard goodall really knows what hes talking about, I had no idea penny lane was in so many different keys, I always wondered why the song had a strange floating feeling to it.whenever a song modulates to a another key it changes the tonality and color of the whole song.Normally the shift to another key is very noticable but mccartney does it so well you really dont notice it, just the effect of it.

Yeah, me either. Learning that and the other things he explained about their music laid it all out as to why they were innovators, movers and makes of music in the 20th. he's certianly correct that in all that 'simplicity' resides some beautiful 'complexity' that listeners perhaps aren't aware of. I' not sure about anybody since music is very very eprsonal but I also got an appreciation of the 'little' things in their music that absolutely gives great leasure when hearing things in the music. For examaple, in 'I Feel Fine', those oooh oooh's as they come in right in with 'that's she's my little girl' are just unbelievable in making the music ride. Or the Sgt Pepper reprise when the guitars and drums come in and you hear that 'whew' come in or whatever sound it is!!). Little things but they make something special in the music...well that's for me. I'm sure everybody has theirs!
I've listened to Sgt. Pepper probably close to 1,000 times in my lifetime, starting when my brother taught me how to use a record player at 5 years old. That was the album he used to show me. Over the years I wore out my dad's LP copy and two cassette copies before finally getting it on CD (incidentally, the first CD I ever bought when I got my first CD player). And I'm still picking up details I never noticed. I just noticed this evening for instance how almost imperceptibly they switch back and forth between a 3/4 and 4/4 time signature in "Good Morning Good Morning," with a couple 6/8 sections thrown in for good measure.

I love the Anthology version of Good Morning so much more than the final version with all the extra sound effects.....
