I'm going to go with The Kinks over The Who.

I had the misfortune of seeing the Who at MSG during the Quadrophenia tour back in '74. It was a four-night stand and two of those went into rock annals as perhaps the single-worst concerts in history. Sound problems, gear problems, and a pissed off band. A 95-minute show, no encore at a time when most concerts were 2 hours or more.

Golden Earring blew them off the stage. Seriously. They were really good.

That's fourteen smash hits in four years. That's what you call pressure. Pressure appears to be every bit as effective as inspiration. Even more amazing when you consider they were all written and sung by one person.
Right. You know with all that early success it's amazing to note that Mr. Davies said he accomplished everything he wanted to do in music at 22 yrs old! And he's still making music.

The Who and Kinks..musical giants and let's not forget 'competitors' but really both innovated in their own ways. I thought the Who's personalities were way upfront and contributed alot to the music and how their music sounded. With the Kinks well it was Ray who really was the genius. Not to say Dave wasn't bad but arguably Ray was the best writer in the Kinks and for that matter in all of rock. His songs always have deep meanings..everyone of them.

As far as songwriting and this is just my opinion I thought Ray pushed the topics of songs much farther out than Townshend. His themes took in alot, love, nostalgia, growing up, growing old, memories. And on top of it the Kinks' musical style was I'd say more varied. But the Who Sell Out and Whos' Next albums are up there in craft and writing with the 'Something Else' and 'Village Green Preservation Society' the great Kink contributions.

But in any case we have these two songs that signify both bands' greatness...Rock can't live without them now....;-)...the Kinks song to me is really not one of their most well known but I thought it's a small gem of what Ray accomplished in his song writing.

The Who are the best because of Keith Moon.

Dave Davies taking a razor to this amp changed rock and roll.

Advantage: Kinks.

Personally I preferred he Kinks. But I also preferred Dave Clark Five. Stevie Ray was dynamic: I agree but not quite the same era. many groups in 60's with their own sound that never continued on that I loved their hits.
