When I grew up there weren't many other guitarists ... There was one other guitarist in my school who actually showed me the first chords that I learned and I went on from there. I was bored so I taught myself the guitar from listening to records. So obviously it was a very personal thing.[9]
While i agree America has some great bands and musicians. Most of the biggest bands in rock come from England. Rolling stones, Beatles, The Who, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd etc etc,,,
Depends how far back you want to go though doesn't it? A lot of early US music was derived from African rhythms, British and Irish folk and other European traditional music.
Personally I'd put US and British music on a par as the best, although I'm more into alternative, less mainstream genres.
Of course this might be biased because I've only lived in the States, but it seems to me that the US has just a huge amount of great bands and songs compared to other countries. Black Sabbath came from England, but then there was Ronnie James Dio... I've listened to music from other nations, but generally I end up listening to US bands.
And American music ranges from nearly every genre. I'm sure our top 40's have been exported around the globe, but it's in the more alternative areas that I think US music really shines. But then again, I've never been impressed with the top 40's. How prevelent is non top 40 US music in other countries?
What do you all think?
Well of course you are biased.
I don't think our music is exceptionally great but I do think some productions are well made. It does not necessarily mean I like that music, some good productions can have very silly lyrics.
The worst productions IMO were in the 70's in Spanish and in the 80's in English, Here's a great example, you can barely here this disaster:
