I disagree with every rock and roll fiber of my being. I think they are one of the Top Five rock bands in history.
My pick for most overrated has always been an easy one: Nirvana and Kurt Cobain.
But I never got the whole Seattle Grunge thing anyway, so I am a but biased.
But most of Nirvana's stuff was just plain awful: muddy and incoherent; juvenile lyircs. Amateurish studio production. Buncha waste-oids.
I defy anyone to tell me they understand the lyrics to "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by listening to it without reading the lyric sheet first! LOL.
Oh, I guess if i was a stringy-haired, strung-out 26 y.o. kid on the streets of Seattle with a skateboard under my arm I might dig Nirvana and the whole grunge thing a bit more.

Lol, totally agree with you on Nirvana, though I'd change that age to 14-16, you should be way past Nirvana by 26, heck I'm 24 and I think I realized they were too immature around 16. But yea, sorry Zep is just overrated. They were a good rock band and I'd put them in a top 50 band list for sure, but top 5? no way. Jimmy page while a great riff writer, was pretty damn sloppy live, and plants voice can get pretty annoying, not to mention if you listen to the lyrics they're pretty juvenile. There's exceptions, No Quarter is a fantastic song, but if Plant yells "baby" or talks about his "lemon juice" one more time, I swear to god. JPJ and John Bonham were a fantastic rhythm section, nothing flashy but held a really tight pocket. Still, as a drummer myself I'd put Bonham in the 15-20 section of best rock drummers of all time, you add in jazz and fusion guys and he may be in the 45-50th range.

You realize, I'm sure, that Jimmy Page was a junkie, too.
Maybe you should ask Der Vogel, since he's the one who brought it up. He seems to be equating grunge and Nirvana with heroin use. I was just pointing out that the band he's defending also had members who were using heroin. You can't crucify one band for something while defending another band that was doing the same thing.

Say what you will about grunge, but I think it was an absolute necessity in order to wipe the hair metal bands off the charts once and for all. In all the fads that have passed through rock & roll from the beginning, I don't believe that a single one overstayed its welcome quite like hair metal did. Congress should strike a medal and award it to the people who drove the likes of Warrant, Poison, Skid Row and Winger from the airwaves.
