That instrument in the introduction to this video -- what is that horn instrument, exactly? I ask because I've of course heard it before many times but have never identified it because I don't like jazz and it's honestly the worst musical sound I've ever heard, but I've never been sure what it is. (I only used this video because I finally came across it again and the video is not related; I'm just interested in the sound part at the beginning.) Thanks!

What is the worst-sounding instrument you've ever heard? What "hurts" your ears and makes you cringe?

Sounds like a muted Trumpet to me. A Zither gets me after awhile. See The Third Man.

yup, muted trumpet...

my least favorite sounding instrument is probably the sax as a solo instrument (with the lone exception of Boots Randolph Yakety Sax), but I don't dislike it the sax in general.

There's this thing that trumpeters put over the bell (the front hole/opening) of a trumpet that changes the character of the instrument (mutes it). They hold it in the opposite hand of the one that they're holding the trumpet with and playing notes with, perhaps obviously. It gives a ringy and nasally tone to the instrument and I think makes the trumpet sound more quiet and intimate where normally without a mute it can be very powerful and strident. I think it can also be moved in and out from the bell to make a worbling or wah wah effect like a whammy bar on an electric guitar can be used to create a warped vibrato in the pitch of the music.

Yes, I think I've seen musicians do this (in films, or somewhere). Thank you and BlackZappa301 and soupson1 so much! Now I can confidently say which musical sound I despise the most (and likely trod on lots of people's musical sensibilities and preferences in the process)

I hate that hippy-dippy 70's recorder sound. Chicago used one on the solo to Colour My World and it RUINED the rest of the song.

Mad sounding instruments- hmmm. Not big on trombone. Oboe can be harsh if not played by an expert. But the worst are some of the synth sounds that are dated, like the Yamaha DX7 or similarly smaltzie electric pianos.
