Musician, and member of the experimental electronic Punk rock band "Suicide", has died of congestive heart failure at age 78. He died peacefully in his sleep.
Suicide was active in the NYC Punk scene in the mid-70s through early 80s. Their eponymous debut album "Suicide" was released in 1977.
They were never very famous, but Bruce Spingsteen did an excellent cover of one of their songs, "Dream Baby Dream". They were well liked by musicians and rock critics, alike.
I was fortunate to have seen them perform live, during that era at Max's Kansas City and CBGBs.

One of the true, original, old school punks. Way ahead of his time.
Why is so much in music so derivative nowadays? Who will be the next Alan Vega?
Music is different now than it was then. This was by far not "normal" music, even by the NYC Lower East Side music underground in the 70s. Suicide were innovative outliers. Even then. Even there.
I think there is some good music that is still being made, but the digital era has changed so much.
Suicide played some hauntingly beautiful music that endures today. They have influenced New Wave, and bands such as "Soft Cell" and "The Rayvonettes".
There's a lot of good music to be found. But, I will admit, much of it is in the past. I am also fortunate to have a music savvy 22 year old son, who keeps me informed.
The world is never ready for the best music. We were fed pap in the 70s and 80s too. But.. I'll admit, the current stuff is worse.

X10 Sheena^^^^ Soft Cell's brilliant early work had alot of Suicide in it now that you mention it. Both acts took you to the seediest places on earth.
There's a good recent(ish) interview w/ Alan Vega online and he sounds totally happy and fulfilled with his life.
