As a former Michigander, I thought I would mention this tragic loss.

Fella's it's been good to know ya! We know them much better thanks to Gordon Lightfoot. He wrote that song from a magazine article about the tragic event, forever immortalizing the crew of Edmond Fitzgerald. Gordon is the pride of the Canadian side, born in Ontario. I've always wanted to explore the great lakes region but never had the opportunity. Lake Superior is the deepest of the great lakes and when stormy, it gets waves as tall as any ocean storm. Wouldn't mind seeing the maritime museum in Detroit someday, where the men are honored. It would add to the experience if it was still musty, to help give visitors that feeling which gets you "down deep". I think the Titanic movie gives a pretty good idea of what it would be like to perish in the icy water, not a fun way to go. May they rest in peace, and I hope the company gave good compensation to the widows, for the sacrifice and contribution those men made to American industry and US steel. You can't make steel without iron ore, and sometimes the load can be heavy. Too heavy.

Lake Superior is large enough that it creates its own weather systems, and they can be brutal. Having stood on its shores in a February, it can also be excruciatingly cold. Although, one of the best trips we've taken is a drive around the lake (in a September, when some businesses were already beginning winter shutdown).

I'm real fond of this song. I didn't know anything about the man then but I liked his music. A big loss for sure.
