When I first heard Rimsky -Korsakov's fantasia on Russian Themes, I thought it was a potential violin concerto in one movement. Even has an accompanied cadenza in the 'third movement'. I even wondered whether it might have given Tchaikovsky an idea for his violin concerto. There is even one passage that sounds just like part of the first movement.
This performance gets as close to realising that potential as I've heard.
